How can EMDR Therapy Help The Postpartum Family?

Birth Trauma –EMDR can help reduce fears regarding future labours or help resolve grief from negative past experiences. This can be helpful for both the person in labour and/or their partner or supports.

Loss/Grief – Loss of a parent, pregnancy, or infant loss.

Post Traumatic Stress & Trauma– Parenting can, for some, bring past childhood traumas to the surface and interfere with their desired parenting approach and bonding with children and/or partners.

Fertility– Fertility struggles impact many, and this can be considered reproductive trauma for some. EMDR can target memories of emotional losses, physical pain, and loss of dignity.

Phobias–EMDR can help desensitize phobias such as: childbirth, medical procedures, etc.

Breastfeeding– breastfeeding may not go as desired and subsequent attempts may be impacted by previous difficulties. Painful experiences, feeling a loss of dignity or helplessness can be addressed with EMDR.

Sexual and Physical Abuse – Past assaults or abuse can, for some, be triggered by birth, parenting or medical procedures.

Postpartum Mood Disorders– Past episodes of severe postpartum depression, anxiety or rage and some of the memories that linger may be distressing.

Medical Experiences – Some medical experiences (NICU, surgeries, infant or pregnancy losses) can lead to feelings of helplessness. Worry, distressing images, and fear are often addressed.
